Short description of the degree program

The degree program has an official duration of two years. It is taught in German language (in mathematics). The study program consists of two equal subjects, each with subject-specific science and subject-specific didactics, as well as educational sciences, a practical school semester and a master’s thesis.

  • In mathematics, the content required for the teaching profession at grammar schools is taught in subject-specific science and subject-specific didactics, which go beyond the two-major bachelor’s program. Elective options allow for adequate preparation of both subject-specific and subject-specific didactic master's theses, in subject-specific science in a focus area of the student's own choice.
  • Educational sciences and the practical school semester together form a main component of the program.
The master’s thesis can be written in one of the two subjects in subject-specific science or subject-specific didactics or in educational science.
  • List of the subjects with which mathematics can be combined at the University of Freiburg.
As a second major subject music can also be studied at a conservatory or fine arts at an art college.
  • Mathematics can also be studied as an additional subject with 90 or 120 ECTS credits.

Application

Start of studies in winter semester is possible in all subjects.
Start of studies in the summer semester is only possible if both subjects allow it. Mathematics allows it.

Applications are submitted centrally via the university. The application deadline is July 15 for the winter semester and January 15 for the summer semester.

Important note for applicants with a degree other than the "Polyvalent Two-Major Bachelor" of the University of Freiburg:
Due to the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, applicants from other countries usually must make up achievements from our bachelor’s program - even if they have a teaching-related bachelor’s degree and independent of any admission to the M.Ed. program that may already have taken place. Please be sure to contact the student advisor of your two subjects as early as possible to clarify the extent of the achievements that may have to be made up!

Admission

The admission requirement for the subject Mathematics in the M.Ed. program is

  • either a "first degree at a German university in a teaching-related bachelor's degree program for a teaching profession type of the framework agreements of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder (Kultusministerkonferenz) in the subject of mathematics or in an equivalent degree program of at least three years at a German or foreign university"
( For example, the two-major bachelor's degree program at the University of Freiburg)
  • or – in exceptional cases – a "degree in a bachelor's degree program at a German university or in an equivalent degree program of at least three years at a German or foreign university, which includes subject-specific and subject-specific didactic study components in the subject of mathematics and another subject listed in § 6 paragraph 5 RahmenVO-KM, educational science study components and practical school studie", whereby any missing and therefore to be made up subject-specific qualifications and practical school studies together may not exceed a performance volume of 50 ECTS credits.
  • Foreign applicants also need sufficient proof of German language skills (as a guide: level C1).
  • All applicants must have completed the Online Self-Reflection on Teacher Education and the Teaching Profession (OSEL) or an equivalent orientation procedure.

Important note for applicants with a degree other than the "Polyvalent Two Major Bachelor" of the University of Freiburg:
Due to the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, applicants from outside of Freiburg usually have to make up achievements from our bachelor’s program - even if they have a teaching-related bachelor's degree and regardless of any admission to the M.Ed. program that may already have taken place. Please be sure to contact the student advisor of your two subjects early on to clarify the extent of the achievements that may have to be made up!

Program structure

The study program comprises 120  ECTS points (standard period of study 4 semesters) and is divided into the following areas:

  • subject-specific science (17 points per subject)
  • subject didactics (10 points per subject)
  • Educational science (35 points)
  • Practical school semester (16 points)
  • Master's thesis in educational sciences, subject didactics, or subject science (15 points)
In the area of subject didactics and educational sciences, the university cooperates with the PH Freiburg.

This plan is only an orientation guide! Except for the admission criteria for the master’s thesis, there are no sequence requirements for the mathematics courses. (For elective courses, content-related prerequisites may have to be observed). In case of scheduling conflicts due to the combination of subjects, you must be flexible in planning your studies; the same applies if you start your studies in the summer semester. In this case, you can follow the semester sequence 2 – 3 – 4 – 1.
