Examinations: Concepts and rules
Before each examination, you must register (in good time!) for this examination - partly via the campus management system HISinOne and partly in writing via the Examinations Office.
As a rule, you must register via HISinOne for pass/fail assessments that you wish to complete so that it can be recorded. Course registrations are not sufficient for this.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Student Advisory Service or the Examinations Office. Please always state your degree program and your matriculation number.
The information on this page only applies to mathematics. The current regulations of the respective examination regulations are always legally binding.

Always test in good time (i.e. at least two weeks before the end of the registration period) whether the registration works and, if not, contact the Examination Office or the degree program coordinator immediately.
Typical difficulties: - Go to the course planner, not the course catalog, to register for examinations and register Pass/fail assessments! - The option of registering for Pass/fail assessments in non-subject elective modules will be set up as required, as will registration in special situations. Please contact the degree program coordinator or the Examinations Office in good time! - If a course can be used in several modules, the registration option may first have to be displayed. Registering for a course in a module also blocks the examination registration or course registration of other courses in this module.

If you are unable to attend a registered examination due to illness or for another important reason (e.g. due to another examination at the same time), you must immediately submit an application to the Examination Board for approval to withdraw from the examination. The application must be accompanied by proof of the reason for withdrawal; in the case of illness, a medical certificate (not a certificate of incapacity to work).

Elective modules must be completed as a Pass/fail assessment: This means that the examination achievement normally required for the course is converted into a Pass/fail assessment (and not that it is omitted)! If, for example, a computer science module “Programming xyz” in the computer science degree program requires a Pass/fail assessment in the exercises and a written examination, you must pass both the exercises and the written examination in “Programming xyz” as a non-subject elective module, except that both are treated as Pass/fail assessment.

In some faculties, particularly in Economics and the Faculty of Engineering, registration of the pass/fail assessment in HISinOne is required to participate in exams. However, this registration option is only made available if needed. Please contact the Study Program Coordination Office of the Mathematics Department well in advance.
As a precaution, bring a printed copy of your achievment overview with the registration to the exam.
You can also submit a certificate of completed coursework (including the ECTS credits) to the Examinations Office of the Mathematics Department for credit. In case of uncertainty, make sure to clarify in advance whether the pass/fail assessment can be credited.

When selecting the Financial Mathematics specialization in the M.Sc. program, at least 18 ECTS credits in Economics must be completed within the elective module area. Detailed information, including the list of eligible modules, can be found on the specialization information page.
Timely registration via HISinOne is required; the registration deadline aligns with the deadline for the Master of Economics.
If you have any questions or encounter issues, please contact the Study Program Coordination Office or the Examinations Office of the Mathematics Department.

Registering for a course is merely an expression of the wish to take part in it. It does not oblige you to do so. In the case of ZfS courses, however, non-participation can lead to temporary suspension, see ZfS conditions of participation.
In some courses, a reservation is desired or even required in order to participate in the course. Reservations are also necessary for - the allocation to exercise groups; - participation in the online evaluation of courses; - to be automatically transferred to an ILIAS course for the course.
If the course can be used in several modules in a degree program, a module must already be selected for registration. This selected module is then usually blocked for the registration of examinations or registration of Pass/fail assessments for other courses. In the M.Sc. degree program, a separate “document account” is therefore set up for enrolments so that you do not have to commit to a module when enrolling. In other cases, you can contact the degree program coordinator or the Examinations Office to rebook assignments.
In the B.Sc., no (standard) subject is determined by assignments, but only by registering for examinations or registering Pass/fail assessments. Registrations can be rebooked by the degree program coordinator or the Examinations Office.
During the registration phase, you can cancel a registration in the same way. Since a withdrawal usually has no negative effects, there is no formalized procedure for withdrawing a withdrawal. BOK courses are an exception: Enrolments without attendance can lead to suspensions here. In this case, please note the Conditions of Participation of the ZfS. and the Notes on deregistration.
In the case of small courses (such as tutorials), however, it is a matter of courtesy to inform the lecturer if you decide not to attend the course during the course.

Lectures and tutorials may be attended as often as you like; attendance in the previous semester does not normally prevent you from attending again. If this is the case, please contact the program coordinator! Exercises may also be repeated if the Pass/fail assessment in the exercises has already been passed. This is highly recommended as preparation for an exam, especially in the case of repetition.

The numbers of examinations in HISinOne begin with “07LE23PL-” for mathematics.
You can find detailed instructions in the HISinOne Wiki.
A course registration can never replace an exam registration!
Cancellation of an examination restores the status prior to registration as if you had never been registered (the “examination legal relationship” is dissolved). In particular, there is no obligation to take the examination at a fixed later date and no examination attempt is lost.
Cancellation is only possible before the first attempt at the examination. An approved withdrawal does not count as an examination attempt, but a failed examination without an approved withdrawal does.
Please note the deregistration deadlines.
If you wish to take the examination at a later date after having cancelled, you must re-register using the regular registration procedure. As a rule, it is therefore not possible to take subsequent examinations or re-examinations for individual lectures.
In the legal terminology of the examination regulations, withdrawal from an examination is any absence from an examination for which you are registered and admitted. If the withdrawal is not approved, it counts as a failed examination. If the withdrawal is approved, however, the examination does not count as a failed attempt. The registration and admission to the examination (i.e. the legal examination relationship) remains in place in the case of an approved withdrawal and is postponed to the next examination date, usually in the next semester.
For approval of a withdrawal, a justified application must be submitted to the Examination Board with suitable proof of the reasons.
After a withdrawal, you must take the exam at the next possible date (usually in the following semester). Registration for the next examination date is carried out by the Examination Office.
Since the registration of a Pass/fail assessment is not legally binding, but serves the purpose of being able to record passed coursework in the campus management system, the de-registration can be done informally at the Examinations Office at any time. However, because you can repeat failed Pass/fail assessments as often as you like (exception see below), you will not lose an attempt if you do not deregister. In the event of illness, you therefore do not need to submit a certificate.
Exception: The exams for Analysis I and/or Linear Algebra I can only be repeated as often as you like within the orientation period. They are therefore similar to examinations. If you have not yet passed the orientation course, you can submit a certificate to the Examinations Office if you are ill, as this information may be relevant.
If a Pass/fail assessment has been recorded as not passed, this entry remains in the transcript of records until either the Pass/fail assessment is passed or the course is completed. Pass/fail assessments will then be deleted from the transcript of records upon informal request.

Pass/fail assessment numbers in HISinOne begin with “07LE23SL-” for math.

The registration of a Pass/fail assessment is merely the expression of the wish to complete a certain course. It does not oblige you to do so. In the B.Sc., however, the registration of a Pass/fail assessment in the application subject makes this application subject a binding choice.
Failure to register can lead to problems and delays: - A passed but unregistered Pass/fail assessment may not be documented. After some time, it may no longer be possible to verify that the coursework was actually completed. - If the Pass/fail assessment includes a written exam, which is an examination for other participants, attendance must be checked in order to clarify eligibility for participation. Failure to register may result in exclusion from the examination. (For non-subject elective modules, a printout of the performance overview with the registration can be helpful). - If a Pass/fail assessment has been completed but not registered, it is the student's responsibility to obtain confirmation from the lecturer (promptly!) of the completed Pass/fail assessment and submit this to the Examinations Office for booking.
Pass/fail assessments are typically not graded. In some cases, it is possible to enter grades. If you need a grade for a Pass/fail assessment (e.g. in view of a later change of subject), please ask the lecturer in good time.
In the case of graded Pass/fail assessments, the grades appear in brackets on the transcript of records.
Pass/fail assessments that have been registered but not passed initially remain on the transcript of records. They can be deleted by the Examinations Office if necessary.
The Examinations Office does not register students for retakes or re-examinations if these are Pass/fail assessments. You must do this yourself via HISinOne. This applies in particular to the exams for “Analysis I” and “Linear Algebra I ”.
With the exception of the examinations for “Analysis I” and “Linear Algebra I”, all Pass/fail assessments can be repeated as often as required. Repetitions of passed examinations to improve grades are excluded.
