All examination regulations differentiate between these two categories. In most cases, graded examinations have classic examination formats such as exam, oral examination, presentation. Pass/fail assessments are usually somewhat lower-threshold, such as achieving at least 50% of the maximum points to be achieved on the exercise sheets.
Pass/fail assessments must be passed in order to complete a module, but are not included in the grading. The grades of the examinations are displayed on the performance overview in HISInOne.

Always test in good time (i.e. at least two weeks before the end of the registration period) whether the registration works and otherwise contact the examination office or the course coordination immediately. Typical difficulties:

Lectures and excercises may be attended as often as you like; attendance in the previous semester does not normally prevent you from attending again. If this is the case, please contact the program coordinator ("Studiengangskoordination") !

During the registration period an occupancy can be reversed in the same way. As a registration usually has no negative effects, there is no formalized procedure for reversing a registration.

Registration for a course is merely an expression of the wish to take part in it. It does not oblige you to do so. In the case of ZfS courses ("Zentrum für Schlüsselqualifikationen"), however, non-participation can lead to temporary suspension, see ZfS conditions of participation.
In some courses, attendance is desired or even required in order to participate in the course. Registrations are also necessary for - the allocation to exercise groups; - participation in the online evaluation of courses; - to be automatically invited to the corresponding ILIAS course.
If the course can be used in several modules in a degree program, a module must already be selected for registration. This selected module is then usually blocked by the registration for graded examinations or pass/fail assessments in alternative courses. In the M.Sc. degree program, a separate "document account" is therefore set up for enrollments so that you do not have to commit to a module when enrolling. In other cases, you can contact the degree program coordinator or the Examinations Office to rebook assignments.
In the B.Sc., no (standard) subject is determined by assignments, but only by registering for graded examinations or pass/fail assessments. Registrations can be rebooked by the program coordinator ("Studiengangskoordinator") or the examinations office.

If you do not pass the examinations by the end of the 3rd semester, you will be compulsorily exmatriculated and will not be able to continue studying mathematics in the relevant degree program.
In justified exceptional cases, an application can be made to extend the orientation examination period. Justified exceptions are, for example, long-term illnesses or other restrictions. The application is made to the examination board and submitted to the examination office. The justification should always be plausible and comprehensible and should always be supported by evidence, e.g. medical certificates.

The two written examinations on Analysis I and Linear Algebra I must be passed as orientation examinations at the end of the 3rd semester.
At least one of the two examinations on Analysis I or Linear Algebra I must be passed by the end of the 3rd semester at the latest. This also applies to students in combination with Music / Fine Arts, who can extend the study plan to 8 semesters.

The sit-down examination dates are usually entered in HISinOne during the course and can be viewed there. You should be able to see the date of your exams in HISinOne, otherwise please contact the examinations office. You can find an overview of all exams of a semester here

The application to withdraw from the graded examination should be submitted immediately after the reasons for withdrawal become known. For approval to withdraw from an graded examination, a reasoned application must be submitted to the examination board with suitable evidence of the reasons. The form " Rücktritt" must be submitted to the examination office for this purpose.
After a withdrawal, you must take the exam at the next possible date (usually in the following semester). Registration for the next examination date is carried out by the examinations office. You will receive notification of each withdrawal by post.
Pass/fail assessments do not fall under this regulation. In most cases, they can be repeated as often as desired.

Examiner requests for this graded examinations can be entered on this website. The activation for voting usually takes place 2-3 months before the examination period. The examination periods of the individual examiners are announced on this website.
Please note: Submitting examiner requests via this form does not replace exam registration via the HISinOne campus management system. Examiner requests submitted here will not be considered without the corresponding exam registration!

As a general rule, you can only withdraw for the first attempt, not for repeat attempts! (An approved withdrawal does not count as a first attempt, but a failed examination without an approved withdrawal does).
For online registrations, you can deregister independently in HISinOne during the registration period.
Cancellation is still possible in writing at the examinations office up to 7 days before the examination date; the basic rules and the exceptions below apply.
The written de-registration must be received by the examinations office for Mathematics no later than the last working day seven days before the examination. Working days are Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).
Deregistration is not possible for - oral module examinations in the Master's degree programs (in the M.Ed. as an extension subject only in the module "Mathematical specialization" or "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten") - Registration for a thesis - Seminars and proseminars (deregistration only possible in the early registration period)
Deregistration returns you to the status as if you had never been registered. If you wish to take the examination at a later date, you must register again by the specified deadlines. Participation in a repeat examination is typically not possible.

As a rule, you must register for the examinations in HISinOne HISinOne in good time . Here is a quick guide:
1. in HISinOne select ' My studies > Study planner with module plan ' (if necessary with the correct degree program).
2. select the correct semester at the top left and click on ' none ' at the top right for courses and ' all ' for examinations/study achievements.
3. then search for the desired module or course in the list
4. go to ' Register examination ' or ' Register coursework '.
5. if necessary, select the correct group.
Further information is found here. Everything is explained step by step in the HISinOne Wiki.
Exceptions are
1. Oral final examinations in the Master's degree programs: written registration via the respective form (MSc, MEd) to the examinations office for Mathematics.
2. Examinations in the special application subjects in the B.Sc.: written registration via the form to the examinations office for Mathematics

With the exception of the examinations for "Analysis I" and "Linear Algebra I", all coursework can be repeated as often as required. Repetitions of passed examinations to improve grades are excluded.
In principle, graded examinations may be repeated once, some may be repeated twice, in accordance with the regulations of the individual examination regulations described below. Repetitions of passed examinations to improve grades are excluded.
Last edited by Peter Pfaffelhuber on 14/08/2024 at 00:17:35.
In principle, it plays an important role whether the failed examination is an graded examination or a pass/fail assessment.
The examination office registers students for repeat examinations; there is no online registration for repeat examinations. Failed examinations may be repeated once or twice. It is not possible to retake a passed examination to improve grades. Repeat examinations must always be taken at the next possible time, i.e. usually in the following semester. Before the last examination attempt, you have the right to attend the course again upon (informal) application.
Exceptions are repeat examinations in a special application subject, which you register for again using the corresponding registration form. Please always check on HISInOne whether you have actually registered and, if not, contact the examination office of the Institute of Mathematics in good time.
If you are repeating a proseminar or seminar, you must inform the examination office in which (pro)seminar you are taking the repeat examination.
If you do not want to take a repeat examination or do not want to take it on the next date because it is the last examination attempt and you want to hear the course again or you want to change the course (B.Sc., M.Ed.) or the application subject (B.Sc.), you must hand in a written application to the examination office in good time, i.e. before the actual examination.
To repeat an oral examination in one of the Master's degree programs, you must arrange a new date with the examiner, which must be no earlier than four weeks later and no later than the end of the following semester. In the M.Sc. Mathematics, neither the examination subject nor the examiner can be changed; in the M.Ed., it is possible to change the lecture on which the examination is being held once.

The application to withdraw from the examination should be submitted immediately after the reasons for withdrawal become known. In the event of illness, the doctor's visit must take place on the day of the examination at the latest, the application including the certificate (not a certificate of incapacity for work) must be received by the examination office on the third day after the examination at the latest. If the application is sent by e-mail, the original certificate must be submitted to the examination office within one week (in person or by post).
Please note: If someone feels ill and still takes an examination, the examination attempt counts in any case. Subsequent notification of illness has no effect! Withdrawal after a completed, failed examination is only permitted in extremely exceptional cases!
Pass/fail assessments do not fall under this regulation. In most cases, they can be repeated as often as desired.

It is best if you already have an idea of the direction you want your thesis to take or the focus area in which you want to write your thesis. You can then specifically approach lecturers who work in this field or are active in this focus area. To do this, take a look at the pages Lecturers and research areas and Typical study procedures in the focus areas. It is best to make an appointment for a consultation. Lecturers with whom you are currently attending a lecture or seminar can of course be approached during the course.
If you are unable to find someone to supervise your thesis in this way, you can apply to the examination office to be assigned a supervisor. However, this is rather unusual.
Bachelor of Science:
In the course of your studies, you will usually develop an idea of the focus area in which your work should be located through your compulsory and elective courses. Ideally, you should then listen to an in-depth lecture and attend a seminar in this area. The page Typical study programs in the focus areas is helpful. You are welcome to contact the lecturers in this specialization area at an early stage. It may be a good idea (as was still mandatory in the old examination regulations from 2012) to write your thesis based on a seminar presentation. However, this does not necessarily have to be the case, especially if no suitable seminar is offered.
Master of Education:
You can write your Master's thesis in one of the two subjects in subject science or subject didactics or in educational science. Interdisciplinary theses or theses that combine subject-specific and subject-didactic aspects are also possible. (At times there was a rumor that you had to write your Master's thesis in the other subject than your Bachelor's thesis; this is not true).
If you want to write your thesis in mathematics, it is important to decide whether it should be in subject didactics or subject science, as the study plan depends on this:
Master of Education as an extension subject:
In the "major subject variant" with 120 ECTS credits, a Master's thesis in subject science or subject didactics is possible; otherwise, the same applies as for the M.Ed. degree program.
In the "minor subject variant" with 90 ECTS credits, a purely didactic thesis is not permitted. You can use the information on the two-major bachelor's program as a guide.
Master of Science:
Students in the Master of Science usually already have a good insight into mathematics and an idea of which area they want to specialize in. It is useful to take a look at the page Typical courses of study in the specialization areas Feel free to approach lecturers during lectures and seminars. Ideally, you should familiarize yourself with the topic of the Master's thesis in the specialization module or in the elective module in a reading course "Scientific Work".

Bachelor's and Master's theses are primarily supervised by professors (including junior professors) and private lecturers at the Institute of Mathematics. These are listed with their areas of research and interest on the page Lecturers and research areas.
Research assistants who are not habilitated (i.e. who do not have the title "Privatdozent/in" or "Dr. habil.") may only officially supervise Bachelor's or Master's theses if they have been granted permission to do so. If in doubt, you must ask about this.
It may well be that the thesis is de facto supervised by a research assistant. However, this does not play a legal role - the term "supervisor" always refers to the person officially designated and responsible for supervising the thesis.
Co-opted professors also have the right to supervise mathematical theses: These are usually mathematicians who hold a professorship at another faculty but are entitled to supervise within the Department of Mathematics due to their co-optation. They are also listed on the Lecturers and Research Areas page.
In exceptional cases, a thesis can also be supervised by a professor or a private lecturer from another faculty or another university if this is done in agreement with a professor or a private lecturer from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Freiburg. Such external supervision must be applied for via the thesis registration form and approved by the Examination Board.
A Bachelor's or Master's thesis can also be written in collaboration with a company. In this case, however, either the official supervision takes place at the Institute of Mathematics or the contact person at the company happens to be a habilitated professor or even a professor and the exception described in the previous section is possible. In the first case, experience has shown that a thorough consultation between the official supervisor of the thesis and the de facto supervisor in the company is necessary.
These can only be supervised externally, usually by mathematics professors at the University of Education Freiburg. This is possible within the supervision capacity of the University of Education and requires the completion of the module Fachdidaktische Forschung. Please register your interest with the Department of Mathematics Education.
For the agreement with a professor of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Freiburg, please contact either someone who is closely related to the subject of the thesis or the Department of Mathematics Education.

In mathematics, the Bachelor's thesis is typically the first major project to be written during the course - in the M.Ed. program, it can also be the Master's thesis. Good supervision is therefore particularly important. Regular supervision meetings during the preparation of the thesis should be a matter of course, and you should also request them if the supervisor does not insist on them anyway. Of course, this also applies to a Master's thesis if you have already written a Bachelor's thesis in mathematics.
The aim of a thesis is to work on a topic using "scientific methods and to present the results appropriately". In doing so, the "rules of good scientific practice" must be observed, as described in the University Code of Conduct. In particular, one must work "according to the recognized rules (lege artis)" of the subject. It is the task of the supervisor to convey these rules to you.
In particular, you must be taught how and when to cite mathematical results that you have not obtained yourself. Please note that neither the way in which exercises are dealt with in the tutorials for lectures nor lecture notes are suitable models for this. Information on citing in mathematical papers can be found in this presentation. In cases of doubt, you should discuss this with the supervisor of your thesis (and if in doubt, it is better to cite more than less).

Registration must be made in writing to the examination office using this form under "Forms and information sheets"). The form must also be signed by the supervisor of the thesis and then submitted to the examination office (mailbox in front of the examinations office or by e-mail) no later than two weeks after the topic has been submitted. The subject examination board then officially assigns the topic. The processing time begins with this assignment.
In the B.Sc. degree program in Mathematics according to the "old" examination regulations from 2012, the thesis must be submitted no later than the day of the presentation in the Bachelor's seminar. There are no requirements in the opposite direction: The presentation can take place any time after registration of the thesis.
In the B.Sc. degree program in Mathematics according to the "new" examination regulations of 2021, there is no longer a Bachelor's seminar. You do have to complete a seminar, but it does not have to be related to the Bachelor's thesis.
When registering for a Bachelor's or Master's thesis, you must confirm that you are familiar with the Rules of Good Scientific Practice. An introduction to these rules can be found on here.
The topic of the thesis is determined at the time of registration; the title of the thesis can be changed later. The topic may be changed once within certain deadlines.
When registering the thesis, you can request to write the thesis in English (or another language) with the consent of the supervisor.
Initial entry.
You must submit the application informally by letter with an original signature to the examination office. You will receive a notification by post.
Initial entry.
A topic for a final thesis can be replaced once by a new topic without it counting as a failed attempt if the "return of the topic" takes place within the following deadlines:
The examination office must be informed of the return of the topic in writing by the deadline (and of course this should definitely be discussed with the supervisor beforehand). A new topic must then be assigned within four weeks; the processing time then begins anew.
Initial entry.
The processing time begins on the day on which the topic is officially assigned. The following table provides the processing times specified in the examination regulations. In each case, this is the maximum time that may elapse between registration of the thesis and submission. Please also note the (limited) possibility of extending the processing time.
degree program | processing time | ECTS |
---|---|---|
Two-Major-Bachelor | 3 months | |
Bachelor of Science | 3 months | 12 |
Master of Education (also extension master) | 4 months | 15 |
MSc Mathematics | 6 months | 30 |
MSc Mathematics in Data and Technology | 6 months | 30 |

Theses must be written in German or English.
In principle, theses must be written in German. However, you can apply to write your thesis in another language with the consent of your supervisor when you register your thesis (this can be indicated on the registration form). (This can be indicated on the registration form.) In this case, the thesis must contain a German summary.
It may be possible to write the thesis in French, all other languages are likely not possible. The review must be ensured. The application is submitted with the examination registration and decided by the Subject Examination Committee.
Initial entry.
A presentation of the Bachelor's thesis is only required in the B.Sc Mathematics degree program; a presentation of the Master's thesis is required in the MSc Mathematics degree program. The presentations are ungraded pass/fail assessments worth 1 ECTS point in the B.Sc. degree program and 3 ECTS points in the M.Sc. degree program. In the MSc Mathematics in Data and Technology degree program, concepts of the final thesis are presented in the Graduate Speaker Series.
A separate registration for the presentation is not required, neither in writing nor via HISinOne.
The presentation of the Bachelor thesis should be about 30 minutes long, but can be longer by mutual agreement. Beyond this, there are no formal or time requirements, especially not for the presentation of Master's theses. A presentation may take place before the end of the submission of a thesis (preferably not too early) and should not take place too late afterwards. The external framework can be very variable: from a discussion with the supervisor and assessor in an office to a presentation in front of an audience in a senior or project seminar. Both the date and the circumstances must be agreed with the supervisor.

The examination regulations do not specify the number of pages or the formatting of a paper (i.e. font size, line spacing, margin size, citation style, etc.). Please discuss all these points with the supervisor of your thesis. Depending on the topic, the supervisor will certainly have ideas about the scope of the paper; experience has shown that formatting issues are of secondary importance. However, it is usual to write the paper in A4 format and to use the mathematical word processing program LaTeX. (LaTeX is not mandatory, but makes life easier).
The title page should contain the following information: Candidate's name, title, type of work, subject, university, semester (of submission). Further information such as the name of the supervisor is facultative.
For the title page, this sample can be used.

The thesis must be submitted in two - or in the M.Sc. degree program Mathematics in three - printed and bound copies to the examination office of the Institute of Mathematics by the deadline (in person, in the mailbox in front of the examination office or by post - in this case the date of the postmark is considered the date of submission). In addition, the thesis must be submitted (preferably by e-mail) as a pdf file. As a rule, the supervisor would also like to receive the final version of the thesis as a pdf file by e-mail.
Electronic submission is sufficient to meet the deadline; the printed copies must then be submitted within the next two weeks together with a written confirmation that the printed version corresponds to the pdf version.
When submitting the paper, you must confirm in writing on a separate sheet of paper (do not include in the thesis!)
Please read the exact requirements and the exact wording in the current version of the general part of the examination regulations; changes are possible! (The examination regulations are here.
If the thesis contains a programming part, the associated programming code must be submitted electronically as a separate file when the thesis is submitted. You should clarify in advance with your supervisor whether this is sufficient or whether a printout of the programming code (possibly as part of the thesis) is required.
Initial entry.
In justified cases, the Subject Examination Committee may extend the processing time upon request by the following maximum periods:
If the extension is requested due to illness, a medical certificate must be submitted "containing the medical findings necessary for the assessment". If the extension is requested because the topic is too extensive for the time actually planned, the supervisor must give a statement about this matter.
Initial entry.
A thesis is assessed and evaluated by the official supervisor. In some cases, there is also a second reviewer, always in the M.Sc. degree programs and in exceptional cases in the M.Ed. degree program.
(These exceptional cases are: for interdisciplinary theses; for theses with external supervision, unless it is a subject-didactic thesis supervised at the PH Freiburg, for which there is only one review).
The second assessor is appointed by the responsible examination office, usually at the suggestion of the supervisor - students do not have to worry about this.
The duration of the assessment should not exceed six weeks. If you need the assessment in a hurry (e.g. due to enrolment in a Master's degree program or starting a job), please discuss this with your supervisor as early as possible. If the assessment is delayed, please contact your supervisor and the examination office.
If there is only one review and it evaluates the thesis as passed, the grade of the review is the grade for the thesis. If the review assesses the thesis as failed, the Subject Examination Comittee will appoint a second review. If the second opinion also assesses the thesis as failed, the thesis is failed. If the second review assesses the thesis as passed with grade x, a third review is appointed by the Examination Board, which determines the final grade y with x ≤ y ≤ 5.0 and thus determines in particular whether the thesis is passed or failed.
If there are two reviews, the arithmetic mean of the two individual grades rounded down to one decimal place is the grade for the work, unless the two individual grades x1 and x2 differ from each other by at least two grade levels. (Grade levels are "very good", "good", etc. - it is therefore not a question of the difference between the two grades). In this case, the Subject Examination Comittee appoints a third expert opinion, which determines the final grade y with min{x1,x2} ≤ y ≤ max{x1,x2} and, in particular, whether the thesis has been passed or failed.

The report can be viewed at the examination office until 6 weeks after the result has been announced. An appointment for viewing must be requested by e-mail to the examination office.

A thesis can be repeated exactly once if it is not passed. To do so, you must register the repeat thesis no later than two months after receiving notification of failure or submit an application for a new topic.

As a general rule at the University of Freiburg, you do not need to have completed your Bachelor's degree to apply for a Master's degree program. Important: The application deadline (in mathematics September 15 or March 15) must not be missed under any circumstances, regardless of the status of the Bachelor's thesis!
For enrollment, however, the Bachelor's program must have been completed. For Freiburg Bachelor's graduates, it is sufficient if the completion of the Bachelor's program is documented in HISinOne; the certificate does not necessarily have to be available yet. (Foreign applicants need the certificate for enrollment).
The deadline for enrollment is usually the beginning of October for the winter semester and the beginning of April for the summer semester. However, this deadline can be extended until around the end of the second week of lectures in consultation with the Student Secretariat if, for example, the reports for the Bachelor's thesis are still outstanding.
In concrete terms, this means for Freiburg students who want to join a Master's degree program at the University of Freiburg: If time is running out, you should re-register for the Bachelor's degree course in the following semester and plan the registration for the Bachelor's thesis so that the report is available by the beginning of the lecture period at the latest, so that you can then transfer to the Master's degree course. How much time the supervisor needs for the assessment should be discussed with him/her in advance. The examination office usually only needs one day to enter the grade in HISinOne, but may not be staffed every day.
For example, if you want to write your thesis in the months of June to August, the six weeks allowed for the assessment will be sufficient for you to transfer to the Master's program in mid-October. If, on the other hand, you would like to write your thesis between July and September, the assessment must be completed within two to three weeks so that you can register or transfer in time: This is only possible after prior consultation with the supervisor!
In order to enrol at other universities, the certificate must usually be available and, of course, the application and enrolment deadlines of the respective university must be observed, which may end much earlier. It is therefore difficult to give a general timetable. In addition, the examination office also needs time to prepare the certificate and have it signed, especially if the typical summer vacation period is involved. A few universities allow conditional enrollment, but this must be clarified with the university.

All civil service professors at the Institute of Mathematics are approved as examiners for the state examination in mathematics. The state examination is conducted by two or three examiners, who you can choose yourself within the scope of the capacities of the individual examiners (early agreement is advisable). The examination comittee is chaired by a representative of the State Teacher Examination Office.
The examination is based on the provisions of the GymPO for Mathematics (pdf). The basic and overview knowledge is tested via the basic lectures Analysis I and II and Linear Algebra I and II. In addition, 4 SWS of lecture material must be selected for each chosen area of specialization (three in the major subject, two in the minor subject). For most of the 4-hour lectures typically considered as examination material, the assignment to one of the five sub-areas results from the lecture title. The following rules also apply:
The "Grundlagen- und Überblickswissen" is examined equally by all examiners, i.e. in the main subject (or minor subject), one examiner is given 20 minutes (or 22.5 minutes) of examination time per area of specialization, of which one third is allocated to the basic and general knowledge.
The Landeslehrerprüfungsamt is responsible for the state examination; you can also find the registration forms and registration deadlines on its website.
