Courses include lectures, tutorials, practical exercises and (pro-)seminars, as well as BOK courses at the Centre for Key Qualifications (ZfS).
Here you will find more detailed information about courses, including special features of the individual degree programmes. If you are not yet familiar with a type of course and would like to attend a seminar for the first time, for example, the relevant sections may be helpful. Please note that explanations of coursework and examinations can be found here.

To register for a course, log in to HISinOne. Use the quick links or "My studies" to open your study planner where you can register for courses that are planned for your degree programme (instructions in the HISinOne Wiki). If you cannot find the desired course, go to the course via "Study programmes > Search courses" and select "enrol". You must then select the module to which you would like to assign the course.
Registering for a course is merely an expression of the wish to participate in it. It does not generally oblige students to perform any work in the course. On the other hand, enrolment is required for some administrative processes (e.g. the allocation of exercise groups, e-mail communication or access to ILIAS courses). For courses at the ZfS (e.g. BOK courses), non-participation can lead to temporary blocking, see ZfS conditions of participation.
IMPORTANT: Registering for a course does not replace exam registration or course registration!

Mathematics lectures are usually two or four hours long and are accompanied by an exercise. Some lectures are additionally accompanied by a practical exercise in which programming tasks related to the lecture material are dealt with. Depending on the degree programme, a practical exercise can be part of the same module as the lecture or be used separately in an elective or optional area (for more detailed information, please refer to the semester-dependent supplements to the module handbooks). The practical exercise can be attended either in conjunction with the lecture or in a later semester.
The booking period for lectures runs from 1 September (winter semester) or 1 March (summer semester) until approximately one month after the start of lectures.
The exercises are booked separately and the following deadlines apply:
Several tutorial dates are offered for larger courses. If you are assigned to a tutorial when you do not have time, please contact the assistant and your tutor; it is often possible to switch.
ATTENTION: Registering for a course does not replace registering for the examination or registering for coursework! In particular, the assignment to an exercise group at the beginning of the lecture does not mean that the "study achievement exercise" has been registered! You can find more information on the registration of coursework and registration for examinations here (link?).

A (pro-)seminar deals with selected topics that are presented by the participating students in the form of lectures. If you would like to attend a (pro-)seminar, you must apply for a place in the last weeks of lectures of the previous semester. You will find the programme as well as the required prior knowledge and registration information in good time in the annotated course catalogue.
In the following cases, you must contact the degree programme coordinator in good time, as the registration options are not set up by default:

In a reading course, the material of a four-hour lecture is studied in supervised self-study using scripts or articles. Reading courses deal with special topics or replace irregularly offered lectures and are particularly suitable for preparing the content of a Master's thesis (in M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Ed. Mathematics). Usually, reading courses are not announced in the course catalogue, but are offered after individual consultation with the respective lecturer. If you are interested, please contact a professor or private lecturer before the start of lectures.
The content of the reading course, the more detailed circumstances and the specification of the coursework to be completed will be determined by the supervisor at the beginning of the lecture period. The workload should correspond to that of a four-hour lecture with exercises.
exercises.
Registration for coursework in a reading course is set up in HISinOne.
In the M.Sc. Mathematics, reading courses can be used in the lecture modules "Mathematics" and "Specialisation Module" as well as in the mathematics elective module "Scientific Work". In the M.Ed. Mathematics (incl. extension subject) it is possible to take a reading course as part of the module "Scientific Work".

The application subject in B.Sc. Mathematics supplements the mathematics degree programme with content from another elective subject. Standard application subjects are Business Administration (BWL), Biology, Computer Science, Physics and Economics (VWL). Other application subjects are possible on application and are referred to below as special application subjects.
The courses for the application subject are specified in the curriculum (partly with options). Information on the possible application subjects and study plans and courses in the standard application subjects can be found here. For special application subjects, a study plan must be drawn up by the teaching unit offering the programme. All information on special application subjects can be found on the information sheet for special application subjects.
Courses in the standard application subjects can be booked as usual via HISinOne.
The application subject is determined in the course of the degree programme and can then be changed again (by submitting an informal written application to the Examinations Office). The choice is made for a
TIP: It is also possible to "get a taste" of several of the standard application subjects first and then have modules from the subjects not chosen credited as elective modules.

In the B.Sc. Mathematics up to 20 ECTS credits and in the M.Sc. Mathematics up to 12 ECTS credits can be completed in non-subject-related elective modules (exception: Financial Mathematics profile line, see below). The following conditions apply:
IMPORTANT: If you have any questions, please contact the degree programme coordinator or the examination office and not the examination office of the subject offered!
Elective modules must be completed as study work: This means that the examination achievement normally required for the course is converted into a study achievement (and not that it is cancelled). If, for example, a computer science module "Programming xyz" in the computer science degree programme requires a course achievement in the exercises and a written examination as an examination achievement, you must pass both the exercises and the written examination in "Programming xyz" as a non-subject elective module, except that both are treated as course achievements.
In some subjects, especially in Economics and at the Faculty of Engineering, you must register for the coursework in HISinOne in order to be allowed to take the exams. However, registration is only possible if required. Please contact the degree programme coordinator at the Institute of Mathematics in good time. To be on the safe side, take a printout of your transcript of records with you when you register for the exam. You can also submit a certificate of completed coursework (with details of the ECTS points) to the Examinations Office of the Department of Mathematics for registration. If in doubt, please clarify in advance whether the coursework can be recognised.
If you choose the Profile line Financial Mathematics in the M.Sc. Mathematics, you must complete at least 18 ECTS credits in Economics in the elective modules. Further information, in particular about the permitted modules, can be found on the profile information page. Timely registration via HISinOne is required; the registration deadline is based on the registration deadline for the Master of Economics programme. If you have any questions or problems, please contact the degree programme coordinator or the Examinations Office of the Institute of Mathematics.

The BOK area (professional field-oriented competences) offers all students the opportunity to acquire comprehensive key qualifications through team-, practice- and problem-oriented work. These include BOK courses of the Centre for Key Qualifications (ZfS) as well as approved language courses of the Language Teaching Institute (SLI), the Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Humanities. Information on the current course programme can be found on the respective websites. The ZfS is responsible for the recognition of academic achievements in the BOK area.
Please note that the registration deadlines differ from the deadlines for maths courses - they usually end at the end of March. Details on the enrolment procedure and deregistration can be found here.
The BOK course is open to all students, but is an integral part of many Bachelor's degree programmes. Bachelor's students are therefore prioritised in the enrolment procedure for BOK courses.

During the occupancy period, an occupancy can be cancelled in the same way. As a booking usually has no negative effects, there is generally no formalised procedure for cancelling a booking. In the case of small courses (such as tutorials), it is a matter of courtesy to inform the lecturer (or tutor) if you decide not to attend the course during the course.
One exception is BOK courses: Attendance without participation can lead to blocking. In this case, please note the Conditions of Participation of the ZfS and the information on Cancellation.
For exercises, the registration can be cancelled in HISinOne in the period from 01/11/2025 - 31/01/2025 (winter semester) or from 01/05/2025 - 30/06/2025 (summer semester).
IMPORTANT: If you have already registered or registered for courses, please note the information on Cancellation (link). This applies in particular to seminars, as there is no provision for booking.
