Step 0: Supervision of the dissertation

Apart from various doctoral programs those interested in a doctorate must first be supervised by a person authorized to supervise doctoral candidates (see §3 of the Promotionsordnung) and receive a confirmation of supervision.

After the confirmation of supervision, a doctoral agreement must be signed between you and the the supervisor.

Step 1: Doctoral agreement

The prerequisite for acceptance as a doctoral candidate is the conclusion of a doctoral agreement with the supervisor.

Step 2: Acceptance as a doctoral candidate

You must submit the application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate online via HISinOne:

The application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate is generated in the last step from the information entered.

After completion, please send the printed and signed application together with all other necessary documents (§ 6 (2)) to the Dean's Office of the Faculty, Ernst-Zermelo-Str. 1, room 428. Please note that a decision on acceptance as a doctoral doctoral candidate can only be made on the basis of a complete application. The decision on acceptance is made by the doctoral committee.

You will be informed of the decision of the doctoral committee by a letter which, in the event of rejection, includes reasons for the rejection (§ 7 para. 3 sentence 3 RPO).

Step 3: Obligation to matriculation or register

After acceptance as a doctoral candidate by the faculty, you must register in the Study Service Center at the University of Freiburg (see § 38 para. 5, sentence 1, first half-sentence of the State Higher Education Act [LHG]). The enrollment obligation applies to all doctoral candidates who are accepted as a doctoral candidate at the University of Freiburg as a doctoral candidate after March 30, 2018.

There is an exception for doctoral candidates who work full-time at the University of Freiburg (employment contract with at least half of the regular working hours); they can be exempted from the be exempted from the enrollment requirement.

Step 4: Opening of the doctoral procedure/submission of the dissertation

After completing the dissertation, submit an application to the Dean's Office for the opening of the doctoral procedure. The application must be accompanied by the documents listed under § 7 Promotionsordnung.

Step 5: Disputation / oral examination

After receipt of all reviews and the proposal of the reviewers for acceptance of the dissertation, the doctoral doctoral committee appoints the examination board for the oral examination and the determination of the overall result of the doctorate.

The doctoral candidate arranges a date for the oral examination committee a date for the oral examination (disputation).

The oral defense, which can be held in German or English, is an in-depth scientific debate debate, which is intended to show that the doctoral candidate has mastered the subject area from which the dissertation originates and is familiar with current developments in his/her field. The disputation has duration of approximately 90 minutes; it begins with an approximately 30-minute presentation by the doctoral candidate on the dissertation. Step 6: Publishing the dissertation

The dissertation is deemed to be published if it fulfills the conditions according to §13 para. 3 of the doctoral degree regulations.

Step 7: Completion of the doctorate and certificate

The doctorate is awarded by handing over the certificate is completed.

The doctoral degree certificate is only issued when the doctoral candidate has submitted the deposit copies of the dissertation to the Faculty of Mathematics and Mathematics and Physics.

Tasks and duties of the doctoral candidate and the supervisor of the supervisor

These are regulated in the doctoral agreement. In particular the responsible supervisor ensures that the doctoral candidate ensures that the doctoral candidate has been familiarized with the rules of good scientific practice.

  • Advice on questions regarding the doctoral conditions, e.g. regularity of substantive supervision meetings, work for the chair, participation in conferences chair, participation in conferences;
  • In case of conflict, providing an assessment of the situation and pointing out possibilities for a solution;
  • If necessary, a mediation meeting can be held with all parties involved in the conflict can be held;
