All examinations must be registered in good time (see Deadlines and dates) before the examination is taken and all pass/fail assessments must be registered. With a few exceptions (see below), this is done via the study planner in HISinOne. Everything is explained step by step in the HISinOne Wiki.

Quick guide
  1. In HISinOne select "My studies > Study planner with module plan" (if necessary with the correct degree programme).
  2. Select the correct semester (winter or summer semester) at the top left and click on "none" for courses and "all" for examinations/study achievements at the top right.
  3. Then search for the desired module or course in the list.
  4. Click on "enroll".
  5. If necessary, select the correct group.

If online registration is planned but is not possible or does not work, please contact the Examination Office in good time and in compliance with the registration deadline!

Typical difficulties with online registration
  • To register for graded examinations and pass/fail assessments, use the study planner, not the course catalogue!
  • The option of registering for pass/fail assessments in elective modules from other subjects will be set up as required, as will registration in special situations. Please contact the degree programme coordinator or the Examination Office in good time!
  • If a course can be used in several modules, the registration option may first have to be displayed. Registering for a course in a module also blocks the registration for graded examinations or pass/fail assessments of other courses in this module.
Terminology

In German there is a difference in wording for registration: Pass/fail assessments are "registriert" (registered) and graded examinations are "angemeldet" (registered).

  • The numbers of graded examinations (Prüfungsleistungen) in HISinOne begin with 07LE23PL- for mathematics. The status appears on the overview of achievements and can be viewed online in the HISinOne account: ZU stands for "admitted" (zugelassen), ZUV for "admitted under condition" (unter Vorbehalt zugelassen), NZU for "not admitted" (nicht zugelassen). Conditional admission means that the admission requirements have not yet been met.
    There are only two cases with admission requirements for maths modules, for oral examinations in analysis or linear algebra and for the registration of final theses.

  • The numbers of pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen) in HISinOne start with 07LE23SL- for mathematics. The status appears on the transcript of records and can be viewed online in the HISinOne account: REG stands for "registered" (registriert), BE for "passed" (bestanden), NB for "failed" (nicht bestanden).

Consequences of registering for an examination

No examination may be taken or assessed without prior registration and authorisation.
Registration and admission to an examination creates a legal relationship in examinations, which generally only ends when the examination is passed or finally failed, and not, for example, through exmatriculation or a change of degree programme.

The Examination Office of the Institute of Mathematics is responsible for the following study and examination achievements:

  • Mathematics modules and courses in all mathematics degree programmes, including mathematics didactics
  • Modules of the application subject in the B.Sc. Mathematics programme
  • Elective modules from other subjects in the B.Sc. Mathematics and M.Sc. Mathematics programmes
  • All modules in the M.Sc. Mathematics in Data and Technology, including electives in Data offered by other teaching units
  • Recognition of BOK courses in the B.Sc. Mathematics (following a recognition proposal from the ZfS)
  • Recognition of courses for the option "Individual Study Organisation" in the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics, if Mathematics is the 1st main subject.

Certain pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen) must be completed by the end of the 3rd semester, otherwise the right to take examination (Prüfungsanspruch) for the B.Sc. Mathematics or for the subject Mathematics in the Polyvalent Two-Major Bachelor's Programme will be lost. This regulation is called "Orientierungsleistung" (orientation achievement) and is defined in the examination regulations under "Studieninhalte".

  • In the B.Sc. Mathematics programme, the exams for "Linear Algebra I" and "Analysis I" must be passed by the end of the 3rd semester at the latest.
  • In the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics, one of these two examinations must be passed by the end of the 3rd semester at the latest. (The other exam must also be passed, but without a deadline.) This also applies to students in the combination with Music / Fine Arts, who can extend the study plan to 8 semesters.

As both examinations are pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen), they may be repeated as often as desired within the deadline - as often as the examinations are offered. By the end of the 3rd semester, there are usually three: the regular exam in the 1st semester, the repeat exam in the 2nd semester and the regular exam in the 3rd semester.
If you are ill during one of the exams, you can submit a medical certificate to the Examination Office, which may be helpful later when applying for an extension of the orientation period.

The two pass/fail assessments in these courses - exercises and written examination - are treated independently of each other, i.e. you can pass one of them without the other.

Extension of the deadline for the orientation achievement

In justified exceptional cases, an informal application can be made for an extension of the orientation achievement deadline. Justified exceptions are, for example, prolonged illness or other restrictions. The justification should be plausible and comprehensible and supported by evidence, e.g. with medical certificates. The application is made to the examination board and submitted to the Examination Office.

The oral examinations are held every semester in the examination period towards the end of the lecture-free period. You can be examined in any semester as soon as you fulfil the requirements. The admission requirements do not expire.

Admission requirements
  • For the oral examination on Linear Algebra I+II, you must have passed: the written examination "Linear Algebra I" and the pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) in the exercises for "Linear Algebra II".
  • For the oral examination on Analysis I+II, the following must be passed: the written examination "Analysis I" and the pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) in the exercises for "Analysis II".

If you have registered for an oral examination and do not fulfil the admission requirements in time, you will be deregistered from the examination. You will then not be allowed to take the examination; however, you will not fail the examination.

Registration and allocation of examiners
  • During the registration period you must register for the examination via HISinOne. You must first be registered for the pass/fail assessment (Studienleitung) or have already passed it, otherwise registration will not work.
  • In the week after the registration deadline, you will receive an email to submit your examiner requests. If you have not received an email one week after the registration deadline, please contact the Examination Office. The indication of examiner preferences is completely voluntary. If you do not submit any examiner preferences, you will be assigned an examiner, preferably the examiner of the first examination in the case of repeat examinations (does not apply to withdrawals!).
  • The examiners will be allocated on the basis of the requests submitted and within the scope of the examiners' capacities. You may not take both oral examinations with the same examiner, and there is no guarantee that you will be assigned one of your preferred examiners. You will usually be notified of the examiner and exam date via your HISinOne account at least one month before the exam. The examinations usually take place in the examiner's office.

TIP: You can view transcripts of past examinations in the PC pool. This can be helpful not only when preparing for the exam, but also when choosing an examiner.

The oral examinations in the modules listed below can be taken at any time during the degree programme. To do this, arrange an individual examination date with the examiner, have the registration form (M.Ed., M.Ed. Extension Subject - M.Sc. Mathematics - M.Sc. Math in Data) signed and submit it to the Examinations Office at least three weeks before the examination.

Admission to the examination

There are no formal admission requirements for the oral examinations. In particular, the oral examinations may be taken before the pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) in the corresponding module has been completed. However, the pass/fail assessment must be completed and relate to the same content as the final module examination. In the case of irregularly offered lectures, there is no guaranteed possibility of completing the pass/fail assessment at a later date. We therefore strongly recommend that you only register for the examination once you have completed all the necessary pass/fail assessments.

Change of module
M.Sc. Mathematics

Pass/fail assessments (Studienleistung) registered or recorded in one module can be moved to another module as long as the oral examination has not yet been registered. Once the module examination has been registered, no further changes can be made to the module!

M.Sc. Mathematics in Data and Technology

The registered or recorded pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen) can be moved between "Advanced Lecture" and "Elective in Data" as long as the oral examination in the module in question has not yet been registered. Once the module examination has been registered, no further changes can be made to the module!

Repeat examination

In general, repeat examinations must be taken at the latest in the semester following the failed examination and may take place at the earliest four weeks after notification of the failed examination. You arrange a new date for the repeat examination. The following applies:

M.Sc. Mathematics and Mathematics in Data and Technology

The re-examination of an oral examination in M.Sc. Mathematics must be taken with the same examiner on the same subject matter. This also applies to the module "Advanced Lecture" in the M.Sc. Mathematics in Data and Technology.

M.Ed. Mathematics

In the M.Ed. module "Mathematical specialisation" (Mathematische Vertiefung), the course may be changed once for the repeat examination (with two new examination attempts).

Different rules apply depending on whether it is a graded examination (Prüfungsleistung) or a pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) and when you wish to deregister:

  • Withdrawal (Abmeldung) of an examination is only possible for a first attempt up to 7 days before the examination date.
  • A cancellation (Rücktritt) describes a short-term absence from the examination. Cancellation can be authorised by providing proof of the reasons for Cancellation and no examination attempt is lost (e.g. in the event of illness).
  • In the case of pass/fail assessments (Studienleistung), this is a deregistration.

Withdrawal (Abmeldung) from an examination returns you to the status prior to registration as if you had never been registered (the "legal relationship in examination" (Prüfungsrechtsverhältnis) is dissolved). In particular, there is no obligation to take the examination at a fixed later date and no examination attempt is lost.

Withdrawal is only possible before the first attempt of the examination. An authorised cancellation does not count as an examination attempt, but a failed examination without an authorised cancellation does.

For online registrations, you can withdraw independently in HISinOne during the registration period. Afterwards, withdrawal is still possible up to 7 days before the examination date in writing to the Examination Office. The written withdrawal must be received by the Examination Office for Mathematics at the latest on the last working day seven days before the examination. Working days are Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

If you wish to take the examination at a later date after withdrawing your registration, you must re-register using the regular registration procedure. As a rule, it is therefore not possible to take subsequent examinations or re-examinations.

In the legal terminology of the examination regulations, a cancellation (Rücktritt) from an examination is any absence from an examination for which you are registered and admitted. If the cancellation is not authorised, this counts as a failed examination. If the cancellation is authorised, however, the examination does not count as a failed attempt. The registration and admission to the examination (i.e. the legal relationship in examination (Prüfungsrechtsverhältnis)) remains in place in the case of an approved cancellation and is postponed to the next examination date, usually in the next semester.

To authorise a cancellation, a reasoned application must be submitted to the Examination Board with suitable evidence of the reasons.

  • Sufficient reasons are e.g. illness, leave of absence due to studying abroad, concurrence with another examination.
  • Insufficient reasons are, for example, lack of preparation, other examinations scheduled around the time, private trips or family celebrations, unspecific private problems, study abroad within Europe without leave of absence.

You will receive notification of any cancellation by post. After a cancellation, you must take the examination at the next possible date (usually in the following semester). The Examination Office will register you for the next examination date.

Application deadlines

The application to cancellation of the examination should be submitted as soon as the reasons for cancellation become known. In the event of illness, the application together with the medical certificate must be received by the Examinations Office no later than the third day after the examination; the doctor's appointment must take place on the day of the examination at the latest. If the application is sent by e-mail, the original certificate must be submitted to the Examination Office within one week (in person or by post).

If there are "indications of a health impairment" on the day of the examination, the examination regulations state that "clarification must be sought immediately". In concrete terms: If someone feels ill and still takes an examination, the examination attempt counts in any case. Subsequent notification of illness has no effect.
Cancellation after a failed examination is only authorised in extremely exceptional cases!

As the registration of pass/fail assessments (Studienleitungen) is not legally binding, but serves the purpose of being able to record passed assessments in the campus management system, the cancellation of a registration can be made informally at the Examinations Office at any time. As you can repeat failed pass/fail assessments as often as you like (exception see below), you will not lose an attempt if you do not deregister. In the event of illness, you therefore do not need to submit a medical certificate.

Exception: The exams for Analysis I and/or Linear Algebra I (that count as pass/fail assessments) can only be repeated as often as you like before the deadline of the orientation achievement. They are therefore similar to examinations. If you have not yet passed the orientation achievement (Orientierungsleistung), you can submit a certificate to the Examinations Office if you are ill, as this information may be relevant.

If a pass/fail assessment has been recorded as failed, this entry remains in the transcript of records until either the pass/fail assessment is passed or the degree programme is completed. Then, upon informal request, pass/fail assessments that have not been passed will be deleted from the transcript of records.

If you have failed a pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) for which registration in HISinOne is required, you must re-register the pass/fail assessment for your next attempt on HISInOne yourself. There are no specifications as to when a retake must take place.

If you have failed a graded examination (Prüfungsleistung), you will receive a notification by post. If you have further examination attempts, you will also be sent an information sheet with information on retaking the examination. You must then repeat the examination in the following semester at the latest, during the regular examination dates, unless it is an examination with individually agreed dates. You will be registered for the repeat examination by the Examination Office, but you may have to organise an examination date yourself.

The number of times an exam/assessment can be repeated depends on whether it is a pass/fail assessment (Studienleistung) or a graded examination (Prüfungsleistung) and on the rules of the respective examination regulations.

Pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen)

  • Pass/fail assessments can be repeated as often as desired, with the exception of the orientation achievement (Orientierungsleistung). See below under the study programmes for a detailed description of this exception.
  • As a rule, pass/fail assessments are not graded, but grades are sometimes shown for information purposes (in brackets on the transcript of records), especially for written examinations. It is not possible to repeat a passed examination in order to improve your grade; however, you can ask the Examinations Office to remove grades for pass/fail assessments from the transcript of records.

Examinations

  • In principle, graded examinations can be repeated once, in some cases twice, in accordance with the rules of the examination regulations of the individual degree programmes described below.
  • Repeating passed examinations to improve grades is not permitted.

The repetition options for the individual degree programmes are listed here:

Bachelor of Mathematics with two majors (examination regulations dated 28 August 2015 in the version dated 7 December 2021)
  • One of the two examinations for "Analysis I" and "Linear Algebra I" must be passed as orientation achievement (Orientierungsleistung) by the end of the 3rd semester and can therefore only be repeated a limited number of times. The other of the two examinations can then be repeated as often as desired.
  • The oral examinations in "Analysis" and "Linear Algebra", the examination in the proseminar and the Bachelor's thesis may only be repeated once.
  • The examinations in "Algebra and Number Theory", "Elementary Geometry", "Numerics" and "Stochastics" may be repeated twice.
Bachelor of Science Mathematics (PO version 2021, examination regulations dated 31 August 2010 in the version dated 16 May 2024)
  • The two written examinations in "Analysis I" and "Linear Algebra I" must be passed by the end of the 3rd semester as orientation achievement (Orientierungsleistung) and can therefore only be repeated a limited number of times.
  • The oral examinations in "Analysis I and II" and in "Linear Algebra", the written examination in "Analysis III", the examinations in the proseminar and in the seminar and the Bachelor's thesis may only be repeated once.
  • The examinations in "Numerics", "Stochastics I" and in the compulsory electives in mathematics may be repeated twice.
  • Up to two times, a different course may be chosen instead of a repeat examination in the compulsory electives in mathematics (upon timely application). There are then three examination attempts on the new course.
  • The examinations in the application subject may be repeated once; a maximum of one examination in the application subject may be repeated a second time.
  • Instead of a second resit in the application subject, the application subject can also be changed once (upon timely application). In the new application subject, an examination may also be repeated twice. A further change of application subject is not permitted.
Master of Education Mathematics (examination regulations dated 11 September 2018 in the version dated 7 December 2021)
  • The examinations in the module "Mathematical specialisation" (Mathematische Vertiefung) or "Scientific work" (Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten) and the Master's thesis may be repeated once.
  • The examinations in the modules "Extension of Analysis" (Erweiterung der Analysis) and "Didactics of Mathematical Subfields" (Fachdidaktik der mathematischen Teilgebiete) may be repeated twice.
  • Instead of the repeat examination in the module "Mathematical specialisation" (Mathematische Vertiefung), the course on which the examination is being held may be changed once (upon timely application). There are then two examination attempts on the new course.
Master of Education Mathematics as an extension subject with 120 ECTS credits (examination regulations dated 28 April 2021 in the version dated 27 September 2023)
  • The oral examinations in "Analysis", "Linear Algebra", in the module "Mathematical specialisation" (Mathematische Vertiefung) or "Scientific work" (Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten), the examination in the proseminar and, if applicable, the Master's thesis may only be repeated once.

Master of Science (examination regulations dated 19 August 2005 in the version dated 28 September 2023)
  • The examinations in "Seminar A" and "Seminar B" and the Master's thesis may be repeated once.
  • The examinations in the modules "Applied Mathematics", "Pure Mathematics", "Mathematics" and in the specialisation module (Vertiefungsmodul) may be repeated once; a maximum of one of these may be repeated a second time.
Master of Science Mathematics in Data and Technology (PO 2024) (as at 27 September 2024)
  • The examination in the Mathematical Seminar can be repeated once.
  • Oral examinations can be repeated once, a maximum of one can also be repeated a second time.
  • Written examinations can generally be repeated twice.

Failed examinations may be repeated once or twice. It is not possible to repeat a passed examination to improve grades.

Repeat examinations must always be taken at the next possible time, i.e. usually in the following semester. Before the last examination attempt, you have the right to attend the course again upon (informal) application.
The Examination Office registers students for repeat examinations; there is no online registration for repeat examinations. Exceptions are repeat examinations in a special application subject, which you register for again using the corresponding registration form.
Please always check whether you have actually registered and, if not, contact the Examination Office of the Department of Mathematics in good time.

Please note:

  • In the case of repeating a pro-seminar or seminar, you must notify the Examination Office in which (pro-)seminar you are taking the repeat examination.
  • If you do not want to take a repeat examination or do not want to take it on the next date, you must apply to the Examination Office in good time, i.e. before the actual examination, and in writing. This is possible if
    • it is the last examination attempt and you want to attend the course again
    • or you would like to change the course (B.Sc. Mathematics, M.Ed. Mathematics) or the application subject (B.Sc. Mathematics),
  • To repeat an oral examination in the Master's programme**, arrange a new date with the examiner, which must be no earlier than four weeks later and no later than the end of the following semester. In the M.Sc. Mathematics and the M.Sc. Math in Data, neither the examination subject nor the examiner can be changed; in the M.Ed. Mathematics, it is possible to change the lecture on which the examination is being held once.

Legal relationship in examinations (Prüfungsrechtsverhältnis)

A legal relationship in examinations arises upon registration and admission to an examination. From this point onwards, there is a legal obligation between the student and the university with regard to this examination: the university is obliged to offer the examination and the student is obliged to take part in it and, if necessary, to arrange an examination date in good time or to cancel or withdraw from the examination in good time.
The legal relationship in examinations usually ends

  • by passing the examination,
  • by finally failing the examination
  • or by timely withdrawal, which is only possible before the first attempt.

The legal relationship in examinations does not end

  • by exmatriculation,
  • by changing degree programme,
  • by (authorised) cancellation, e.g. due to illness.

You must be enrolled in a degree programme in order to be allowed to complete pass/fail assessments (Studienleistungen) and graded examinations (Prüfungsleistungen). Exmatriculated students with legal relationship in examinations are an exception: they may complete the registered examinations without having to remain enrolled.

Right to take examinations (Prüfungsanspruch)

The right to take examinations is the right to take examinations in a specific degree programme. It exists in principle for all enrolled students, but can be lost if

  • an examination is not passed after all permitted attempts or
  • a deadline specified in the examination regulations for the completion of work has been exceeded without an extension.

In the mathematics degree programmes at the University of Freiburg, the second case currently only exists in the B.Sc. Mathematics and in the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics for the so-called orientation achievement (Orientierungsleistung).

Consequences of losing the right to take examinations

If you have lost your right to take examinations in a degree programme at the University of Freiburg, you cannot continue your studies in this degree programme at the University of Freiburg. You may not take any further examinations in the degree programme and cannot re-register for the next semester. The consequences of losing the right to take examinations for other degree programmes and other universities are regulated in the respective examination regulations and must be obtained from the respective university. You should assume that if you lose your right to take examinations at the University of Freiburg, you will not be allowed to study the same or a related degree programme at other German universities. There are sometimes exceptions if the loss of the right to take examinations is based on an examination that is not part of the examination areas of the new degree programme. What exactly is considered "related" is specified by each university.

At the University of Freiburg, for example, the following applies to the subject of mathematics:

  • If you have lost the right to take examinations in the B.Sc. Mathematics, you can still study the 2-Hf Bachelor with the subject Mathematics, and vice versa.
  • Different subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science are not related in the sense of the examination regulations, i.e. the loss of the right to take examinations in e.g. the B.Sc. Mathematics is not an obstacle to studying Physics or Computer Science.
  • If you have lost your the right to take examinations in the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics, you can continue to study the 2-Hf-Bachelor with other subjects.
  • If you have lost the right to take examinations in the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics or in the M.Ed. Mathematics, you cannot study Mathematics as an extension subject in the M.Ed., and vice versa. (Exception: The reason for the loss of the right to take examinations is the final failure of an examination that lies outside the examination areas of the relevant (partial) degree programme. For example, you may study in the 2-Hf-B. Mathematics if you have lost your right to take examinations in Mathematics as an extension subject due to the module "Didactics of Mathematical Subdisciplines" (Didaktik der mathematischen Teilgebiete). If, on the other hand, you lose the right to take examinations in the 2-Hf-B. or in the extended Master's programme with 120 ECTS credits in Algebra and Number Theory, Numerics or Stochastics, you may no longer study Mathematics in the extended Master's programme with 90 ECTS credits.)

ATTENTION: It is possible to lose the right to take examinations even after de-registration (Exmatrikulation) if a legal relationship in examination still exists and the examination in question has been definitively failed.
