A degree opens the door to attractive and challenging careers. It represents a unique enrichment of personal experience through the freedom to shape a phase of life yourself, through meeting many interesting people and through the intensive intellectual engagement with a subject.

Mathematics is a discipline that has many facets:

  • Mathematics is beautiful because of the clarity of its logical structure, the elegance of its proofs and the creativity required to find solutions to open questions.
  • Mathematics is important because it forms the basis of technical developments, is everywhere in our everyday lives and is a central school subject.
  • Mathematics is in demand because there are few people who can master and explain it.

The career prospects after studying mathematics have been excellent for decades. They are largely independent of the specialization chosen during your studies. A Master's degree following a Bachelor's degree is common. Jobs suitable for mathematicians are often advertised for graduates in economics, engineering or computer science. In the past, the chances of being hired as a high school teacher in mathematics were rather favorable and not subject to extreme fluctuations. However, it is not possible to make reliable forecasts

The occupational fields for mathematicians are broadly diversified. The main areas of work are

  • Education – schools and universities
  • Finance – banks, insurance companies, auditing, etc.
  • IT – software and hardware development
  • Consulting – management consulting and technical consulting
  • Data analysis – medicine, demoscopy, deep learning,...
  • Industry – cars, airplanes, energy,...
  • Research – universities and institutes

Successful studies are less dependent on special talent than on continuous commitment from the outset and perseverance. Studying is demanding and labor-intensive. There are high drop-out rates, which experience has shown to be largely due to students feeling more comfortable in a more practical subject. Many switch to physics, computer science or economics, for example, and successfully complete their studies there. Conversely, students of these subjects also switch to mathematics. It is normal to find the most suitable subject only after an orientation phase and an insight into the course.
