  • The European ERASMUS exchange programme is organized by the faculties.
  • A stay abroad at the end of the Bachelor's degree or at the beginning of the Master's degree is recommended.
  • The program is open to all students who (1) are citizens of a European country or (2) are so-called “Bildungsinländer” and can prove that they have completed a large part of their schooling or the Abitur in Germany.
  • Participants in the ERASMUS program are granted a funding period for which a mobility grant is paid. This funding period does not have to correspond to the actual duration of the stay.
  • The mobility grant for the ERASMUS study visit is staggered according to country groups, which are based on the different costs of living in the target countries.

You can find more information on this here.

If you are interested, please send an application by email to erasmus@math.uni-freiburg.de. In your application, please briefly explain your study plans and indicate / hand in: - date of birth - nationality - address - e-mail address - semester and degree program - letter of motivation explaining why you would like to participate in the ERASMUS exchange program at the respective partner university - desired length of stay at the desired partner university - transcript of records

Interested students are requested to apply in good time (at the latest by the end of February or the end of July each year for the following winter or summer semester). In the case of equal suitability, applications received earlier will be given preferential consideration. A selection will be made from the applications received on time. Later applications will be considered if places are still available. From April or September, however, it will be difficult to meet the application deadlines of the partner universities.

Once your application has been accepted, the Erasmus office will send you all the necessary documents. These include the “Learning Agreement”, in which it must be agreed which lectures will be attended during the semester abroad. The guideline is to attend lectures with a total of 20-30 ECTS credits. You should also receive a message from the desired partner university regarding enrollment there.

The Learning Agreement specifies which courses you would like to take at the partner university and how these courses will be recognised by the home university. It is strongly recommended that you discuss the planned courses in advance with the international coordinator and the chair of the examination board. After your return and successful completion of the courses, recognition will be granted by the Examination Office. To do this, submit the application for recognition (see Downloads), the signed Learning Agreement and the relevant transcripts of records.

Eucor - The European Campus is a network of five universities in the Upper Rhine region. In addition to the University of Freiburg, it includes

  • Université de Strasbourg
  • Université de Haute-Alsace (Mulhouse/Colmar)
  • Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
  • University of Basel

Students from these universities can attend courses at one of the partner universities without paying additional tuition fees. Students have the opportunity to supplement their studies with individual courses at a partner university or to study at one of the partner universities for a limited period of time.
Further information can be found on the Eucor information pages of the University of Freiburg.

The Course Catalogue of the Institute of Mathematics contains links to the mathematics courses of the partner universities.
Contact persons for Eucor at the Institute of Mathematics are the International Coordinator and Markus Junker.

EPICUR is a network of European universities that offers students the opportunity to take part in digital, hybrid or on-site courses, programmes and short stays at partner universities - often during their studies and in English.
Students at the University of Freiburg can complete interdisciplinary online courses, summer schools, short programmes or (research) internships via EPICUR.

Further information and current offers can be found on the EPICUR page of the University of Freiburg.

If you would like to spend a semester abroad outside of the ERASMUS programme, you basically have two options:

  • Via the Global Exchange Programme of the University of Freiburg, which arranges exchange places at partner universities worldwide. In this case, the tuition fees at the host university are usually waived.
  • As a Freemover, i.e. on your own initiative and independent of institutional partnerships. The application is made directly to the foreign university and the stay is organised independently.

The following options are available for financial support for this type of study abroad programme:

  • DAAD-PROMOS scholarship: A DAAD programme awarded by the University of Freiburg. It supports study visits, internships or language courses in non-European countries, for example.
  • Baden-Württemberg Scholarship**: Funded by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation. It supports stays abroad at partner universities (not suitable for freemovers).

You can find more information on funding opportunities at the Service Centre Studium.

IMPORTANT: Find out in good time if you want to complete part of your studies outside Europe. Places are usually only allocated once a year, so it is worth gathering initial information 1.5 years before your planned stay.

An internship abroad offers the opportunity to gain international work experience, improve your language skills and apply your specialist knowledge in a new environment. It can be completed during the degree programme or in the transition period after graduation.
You can also receive financial support for an internship, for example via ERASMUS+, the DAAD-PROMOS programme of the University of Freiburg (outside the ERASMUS+ area) or directly via a scholarship from the DAAD.

Further information on internships abroad can be found here. The EPICUR network can also be helpful in arranging short stays and internships.

Recognition

An internship can be completed as part of the M.Sc. Math in Data programme. You can also complete this abroad. You can find more information on planning and recognition on the degree programme website.
Bachelor students** have the opportunity to complete a voluntary internship as part of the module "Internship plus" at the Centre for Key Qualifications (ZfS). This can be recognised as coursework in the interdisciplinary BOK area. The internship is self-organised; registration for the module takes place in advance via the ZfS.
Students of M.Ed. Mathematics can gain teaching experience abroad as an intern or assistant. Under certain conditions, this stay can be recognised as part of the school internship semester. Further information can be found on the website of FACE.
