Isoperimetric filling problems in non-positively curved metric spaces

In this talk we discuss some connections between the asymptotic geometry \nof simply connected geodesic metric spaces X of non-positive curvature in \nthe sense of Alexandrov, i.e. Hadamard spaces, and isoperimetric \ninequalities for n-dimensional cycles in X. \n\nIn the paper Filling Riemannian manifolds M. Gromov proved that in a \nHadamard manifold every n-dimensional Lipschitz cycle c bounds an \n(n+1)-dimensional Lipschitz chain of volume at most CVol(c)^{(n+1)/n} for \nsome constant C depending only on n, thus an isoperimetric inequality of \nEuclidean type for n-cycles. In this talk we will first give a proof of \nthis theorem which on the one hand simplifies Gromov's proof and, on the \nother hand, also works in the context of Hadamard spaces X. We then show \nthat if X has Euclidean rank at most n then X admits an isoperimetric \ninequality of sub-Euclidean type for n-cycles. A conjecture of Gromov \nasserts a linear isoperimetric inequality in this case. As a consequence \nof our study we obtain that isoperimetric inequalities can be used to \ndetect the Euclidean rank of Hadamard spaces.
