Curvature estimates for surfaces with bounded mean curvature
Dienstag, 18.1.11, 16:15-17:15, Raum 404, Eckerstr. 1
In this talk I will discuss some recent results concerning estimates for the norm of the second fundamental form, |A|, for surfaces with bounded mean curvature. In particular I will show that for an embedded geodesic disk with bounded L2 norm of |A|, |A| is bounded at interior points, provided that the W^{1,p} norm of its mean curvature is sufficiently small, p>2. This is joint work with Giuseppe Tinaglia.

Homogenization of a Navier--Stokes Type System for Electrorheological Fluid
Mittwoch, 19.1.11, 16:15-17:15, Hörsaal II, Albertstr. 23b
Some fluids sharply change their rheological properties in the presence of electromagnetic field.\nThe viscous stress tensor of such fluids becomes not just a nonlinear function of the strain rate tensor \( D\)\nbut acquires a strong dependence on the spatial argument \( x\).\nAn example is provided by the tensor \(|D|^{p(x)-2}D\), where the exponent is determined by the applied electromagnetic field.\nBut, in general, the viscous stress tensor has a more complex anisotropic structure.\nA mathematical theory of electrorheological fluids is described in the book of Ruzicka, where references to experimental data can also be found.\nIt can be assumed that the electromagnetic field is periodic in \( x\) and its period is specified by a small parameter.\nIn this situation, one has to deal with a homogenization problem, and the main task of homogenization\nis to find the effective (homogenized)\nviscous stress tensor that does not depend on the spatial variable.\n

Branch Points of Willmore Surfaces in Any Codimension
Dienstag, 1.2.11, 16:15-17:15, Raum 404, Eckerstr. 1
We consider a Willmore surface immersed in R^m with an isolated singularity of finite density at the origin. Locally, the surface is a union of finitely many graphs, each of which has a unique tangent plane \nat zero and with second fundamental form satisfying \n|A(x)| ≲ |x|^{-1+1/b-e} for all e>0,\nwhere the integer b is the maximal multiplicity of the singularity. This estimate is optimal.\nIt was originally obtained in codimension 1 by E. Kuwert & R. Schaetzle (Duke 138, 2007). The present work rests on an entirely different method \nwhich makes it possible to handle the higher codimensional situation. \n

Regularity of isoperimetric hypersurfaces with obstacles in Riemannian manifolds
Dienstag, 8.2.11, 16:15-17:15, Raum 404, Eckerstr. 1
We consider the following variational problem (the\n"isoperimetric obstacle problem"): Let (M,g) be a smooth\nRiemannian manifold and let G be a bounded domain of\nclass C^2. Find a set of minimal 'surface area' within\nthe class of all 'sufficiently regular' subsets of G\nsubject to a volume constraint. Solutions of the\nisoperimetric obstacle problem are called isoperimetric\nregions, their boundaries are called isoperimetric\nhypersurfaces. In this talk I will discuss some regularity\nproperties of isoperimetric hypersurfaces.
