Polyvalent dual major bachelor's degree programme, Mathematics
Please note that the polyvalent dual major bachelor's degree programme is available in two variants: with teacher education track (i.e. aimed at becoming a secondary school teacher) and with individualised study plans (which you might choose if you wish to study two subjects, but both to the same extent). Questions regarding the organisation of your studies (course registration, exam registration, etc.) can be found in the FAQ. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Student Advisory Service.

🔗Short profile
- A three-year programme taught in German (in mathematics).
- Two subjects of equal weight; can be combined with any school subjects.
- One elective area (known as the ‘Options Area’).
- The study variant teacher education track prepares students for the Master of Education and thus for teaching at secondary schools (Gymnasium). The Options Area is fixed in this case.
- The study variant Individual Study Plan offers a flexible Options Area.
Admission
- Three-year programme taught in German.
- Enrolment is only possible at the start of the winter semester.
- No restrictions on admission (for Mathematics; may vary for the second subject)
- It is possible to switch to or from the BSc in Mathematics.
Mathematics
The Mathematics degree programme begins with fundamental lectures in Analysis and Linear Algebra, before introducing students to several key sub-fields of mathematics: Algebra, Geometry, Numerical Analysis and Probability and Statistics. These are supplemented by an introductory student seminar and a programming exercise (computer-based exercise). The Bachelor’s thesis may be written in Mathematics or in the other subject.
Teaching Option
If you choose the teaching option, the module area consists of subject didactics and educational science. The latter includes a three-week orientation internship at a school.
Together with a subsequent Master of Education and a practical training phase for teacher education, the programme then enables access to a teaching post at secondary schools (Gymnasium). Non-mathematical content is taught in a subsidiary subject.
Mathematics can be combined with any of the school subjects offered at the University of Freiburg. Music at a conservatoire or fine art at an art college can also be studied as a second major. The degree programme then lasts four years.
Mathematics can also be studied as an additional subject (third subject for teacher training).
Option Individual Study Plan Option
In the Individual Study Plan programme variant, the elective module is used for subject-specific elective courses and key skills.
And after that?
The teacher education track is typically followed by the Master of Education. For the Individual Study Programme option, the Master of Science in Mathematics can be taken on with some additional requirements. The MSc Mathematics in Data and Technology can be taken without any additional modules.
Freiburg
Freiburg is a green city at the foot of the Black Forest, offering a wide range of leisure activities. The University of Freiburg not only has a long tradition in all areas of the natural and human sciences, but is also very active in research, as its research ranking shows. The Mathematical Institute, which hosts the majority of this degree programme, covers a broad spectrum of topics, from mathematical logic to machine learning.

🔗You can only start your studies in the winter semester. There are no entry restrictions for the subject of Mathematics.
If you are combining this with another subject that has no entry restrictions, you can enrol up to around ten days before lectures begin in October. In this case, you do not need to apply in advance.
If you are combining it with a subject with restricted admission, you must apply and observe the deadlines (application deadline, and, where applicable, the deadline for an entrance examination in the second subject).
- Deadlines for applications and enrolment
- University information page on applications
- University information page on enrolment / matriculation
- Student Service Center Registration Office – technical processing of applications and enrolment, including for international applicants

🔗All legally binding documents can be found on the central degree programme website, in particular:
- the admissions regulations (Zulassungsordnung), which govern the admission and enrolment at the University of Freiburg;
- the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung), containing the general rules for all polyvalent dual major bachelor's degree programmes;
- the mathematics-specific provisions (fachspezifische Bestimmungen), containing the specific regulations for Mathematics;
- the provisions of the examination regulations for the elective module area;
- the module handbook for the mathematical part and
- the module handbook for Mathematics in the elective area, each of which describes all modules in detail.
The supplements to the module handbooks specify for each semester the options available within the modules and the exact requirements for coursework, assessments, and examinations.
You can find forms, information sheets and similar documents here.

🔗The programme comprises 180 ECTS credits (standard period of study: 6 semesters) and is divided into the following areas:
- Mathematics (75 credits) comprising the modules: ‘Analysis’, ‘Linear Algebra’, ‘Algebra and Number Theory’, ‘Elementary Geometry’, ‘Numerical Methods’, ‘Probability Theory’, ‘Programming Exercise’, ‘Introductory student seminar’
- Second major subject (75 credits)
- Bachelor’s thesis in one of the two major subjects (10 credits)
- Elective module (20 credits)
In the course of your studies, you can choose either the teacher education track (Gymnasium), which follows a fixed curriculum and leads to a Master of Education, or the Individual Study Option. For the latter, combining mathematics with physics, computer science or economics is an obvious choice, but it is also appealing to combine it with a subject such as philosophy, for example.
You can progress to the Master of Science in Mathematics in Freiburg if you write your Bachelor’s thesis in Mathematics and complete a further 18 ECTS credits in Mathematics modules within the optional module area (including Analysis III). Alternatively, it is possible to switch to the BSc programme or undertake a dual degree. Even without these additional requirements, you can go on to study for the Master of Science in Mathematics in Data and Technology in Freiburg.
Study Plans
Depending on when your modules in your second subject are scheduled and whether you would prefer to focus more on mathematics or your other subject at the start, you can either begin with both core lectures, Linear Algebra I and Analysis I (Study Plan Option 1), or with just one of them (Study Plan Options 2 and 3).
The following plans are guidelines – the actual course of study can be organised more flexibly:
The introductory lectures in Analysis and Linear Algebra should be taken as early as possible, with the Bachelor’s thesis coming at the end. The other modules, on the other hand, can be spread across the semesters in which they are offered as desired (taking into account the necessary prior knowledge described in the Module Handbook. Individual study plans can be discussed with the Student Advisory Service.
Please note that at least one of the two examinations in Analysis I and Linear Algebra I must be passed by the end of the third semester at the latest. This also applies to students combining Mathematics with Music or Fine Art, who may otherwise extend their study plan to eight semesters.
Sample study pathways in mathematics
in the Polyvalent dual major bachelor's degree programme (PO 2021)
Option 1: Start of the course with both introductory lectures
This option offers the best introduction to the study of mathematics, but will take up around two-thirds of your study time in the first two semesters. If your subject combination allows, you can start with both introductory lectures and decide after a few weeks whether to continue with them or switch to Option 2 or 3.

Option 3: Starting the degree with Analysis only
This option also offers a more even distribution of mathematics modules across the academic semesters, but has the disadvantage, compared to Option 2, that parts of Linear Algebra are necessary for understanding Analysis II. At the start of the summer semester, a ‘Linear Algebra Bridging Course’ is offered as support, if required, in the form of guided self-study. The advantage of Option 3 is that Analysis I is a lecture closely linked to school curriculum, which consequently makes the transition to university-level mathematics easier for many students.
